Daniel Ng, 58, was born blind.
After working as a call operator for 18 years, he applied for a license in 1999 to busk on the streets, and he’s been out there ever since.
Previously, he had learnt to play the guitar and even started a band when he was 17.
Learned Mandarin
However, he is definitely not a one-trick pony.
After realising the popularity of Mandarin and Hokkien songs, Ng, who only spoke Malay and English initially, picked up the languages.
His knack for creating songs was also quickly discovered by the public, especially those that referenced hot button topics.
Here he is before he was catapulted to Internet fame:
nspired by young people
He isn’t a disenfranchised old man either.
In fact, he’s inspired by the younger generation’s creativity, and encourages other buskers to keep reinventing themselves, which he feels isn’t being done enough.
According to Lianhe Zaobao: Over the past few years Daniel Ng has noticed that the landscape of buskers is changing. He said, “More young people are now willing to be buskers, and they don’t see this as something that’s embarrassing. They’re talented — some of them do rap, and even sing their own compositions. However, I think most of them do this part-time. Being a busker usually isn’t a full-time job, but it can help you realise your dreams in this area. In terms of artistic ability, I think that the disabled performers have room for improvement. Some people do not agree with me and think that what I’ve said is arrogant. But improving yourself is very important. For example, I used to sing English songs, but once I found out that you can earn more money singing Mandarin songs, I went to learn them.”
He’s since earned a loyal group of fans who clap and cheer for him, give him an encouraging pats on the shoulder, and even buy him drinks.
Of course, not everything is smooth sailing for Ng.
Some haters criticise his performance up front.
And for a visually impaired singer, every time he learns a new song, he needs to spend more time and energy to do so.
In recent years, he gathers inspiration from shows like Sing! China to gather inspiration to learn new songs, but the musical arrangement of modern pop songs are increasingly complicated, which can prove to be a challenge.
Not to be defeated by this, Ng has been polishing up his learning of guitar chords, while memorising song lyrics.
If his determination wasn’t admirable enough, he’s been volunteering at hospices and other nursing homes to perform for the terminally ill, which has brought joy and smiles to many patients and their families.
he Singaporean voice
Despite feeling that there is room for improvement, Ng hopes that the local buskers may be able to sing the “voice of Singapore”.
Given his willingness to learn and reinvent himself, along with his catchy, not-so-subtle pokes echoing Singaporean sentiments, this busker truly encapsulate the spirit and hustle of the Singaporean street performer.
f you want to say hi and buy him drinks, he’s got no fixed location, but appears at hawker centres and MRT stations around evening time when people are getting off work, as he wants to help the working class relax.
He also has an additional lunch slot on Fridays as well.
