Flying 4 The Doctors
Information about the aircraft...
A standard Beechcraft Bonanza A36 doesn't carry enough fuel to take the plane over the huge distances we will be covering non-stop. The longest leg is between California and Hawaii at 3,800 kms. A fuel cell is being installed in place of the seats behind the pilot and co-pilot. The fuel cell has hoses that connect this bladder tank to the wings, and a hand pump moves fuel from this cell to the wing tanks. The engineering and installation of this is vital as it's absolutely critical that this system works properly and does not allow air to get into the system. This might easily cause the engine to stop, if that happens we'll have to ditch the plane in the sea and neither Jim or myself want to go for a swim in the middle of the Pacific!
