Simple Explanation of VoIP - YouTube DIY Telecom

what is voip

a basic, simple explanation of VoIP for a non-technical person. Voice Over IP is rapidly changing the landscape of voice telecommunications. The driving factor is how cheap it is relative to traditional phone services. Roughly half the cost or less! Plus, VoIP is so much more powerful and agile than traditional POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service). All those bells and whistles you have to pay extra for with the phone company (call waiting, Caller ID, 3-way calling, call forwarding) - those are all included in the basic VoIP service. Interested in getting VoIP service? here are two of my favorite providers - I use them both. Experienced AT&T tech explains use of Kick Meter - YouTube DIY Telecom

Telecom

Kick Meters (Slide or sidekick) are a tools (similar to an multi-meter) that most LEC technicans carry with them. I had a chance encounter with an AT&T Tech while we were working a trouble. He demonstrated the use of the Kick Meter in isolating trouble on the customer's inside wiring. I am not a subject expert on this tool. The tech was explaining it to me (I'm guy with the camcorder asking questions). In this video, he and I are working a customer location where the phones inside are experiencing frequent and disrupting static on calls. We checked the obvious things like oxidation at the demarc, poor slices (unfortunately, very common) and dead pairs going nowhere. I checked all the wiring inside. Sadly, it was splice after splice and a lot of those line splitters (hate those things!). I work as a freelance Network and PBX tech. Copper wiring is something I deal with often. But, troubleshooting the Telco plant is not really my forte. However, I thought this video could do everyone some good as it would at least provides some understanding of how the Bell guys go about their jobs of clearing static on the line. Plus, you might get a few ideas for your own future use. Ultimately, the problem turned out to be one of the non-ksu phones must have been damaged by lightning (very common in Florida), because when it was removed from the network, the static went away. Anyone who's worked the field for a while doing small busienss systems knows that non-ksu (multi-line phones with no PBX) phones are the most troublesome monster when it comes to noise, static, intermittent connection issues. Unfortunately, SOHO customers love these types of phones because they're inexpensive. Ironically, they save money on the front end by not buying a real PBX. But, they kind of end up spending the money later to get their phones repaired frequently.

Difference between 568a or 568b Network Wiring - YouTube DIY Telecom

telephone

shows the two different methods of wiring jacks, RJ-45, or patch panel for TIA-568a or 568b wiring. The main difference is in the positioning of the 2nd and 3rd pairs (orange and green). Most network jacks made in the past 15 years have the ability to be wired for either 568a or 568b. And, the jacks usually have a wiring color key printed on them to indicate where to put the wires for either pattern. Once the wires are laid out in the appropriate pattern in the jack grooves, the technician then "terminates" the jack with a "110 Punch Tool". (see Networkadvisor.net for list of common tools) Is one wiring method faster than the other? People will have opinions about this, but I have not seen any real evidence that one is faster. It is worth mentioning that the 568B wiring is the MOST common in the U.S. It is important to note that you need to stay consistent with one wiring pattern or the other throughout the entire network. If you are adding on to an existing network, you need to first determine if that network is wired for "A" or "B". And then, match that wiring method. There is also another wiring pattern known as USOC, this was more common back in the 70's and 80's for phone wiring. You want see it much any more. Unlike 568a/b, it fans the pairs out in a expanding concentric pattern. Blue in the center, Orange on pins 3/6, Green on pins 2/7 and Brown on pins 1/8. USOC is not used much anymore. My favorite place to by good quality networking materials? Monoprice. For more informative videos about Telecom and Networking, subscribe to this channel or check out www.youtube.com/networkadvisor

Telephone and PBX Cross-connections - YouTube DIY Telecom

Telecom

shows how cross-connections are made from Station cabling over to the PBX. Using a one-pair 22 or 24 gauge copper jumper wire, we make "cross-connects" from the wire going out to the Telephone jack over to the ports (terminals or TN) on the PBX. Office phones are plugged in to wall jacks. Those Wall jacks have a wire that runs in the wall, through the ceiling and over to a PBX room. Inside the PBX room, those cable come together on 66-blocks. Cross-connects are used to make the electrical connection from the Station wiring over to a particular port on the PBX.

Network-Telecom Career Part 1: Personality Traits - YouTube DIY Telecom

telecommunications

Personality traits of people who might make great Network-Telecom technicians. This is Part 1 in a multi-part series about creating a Career as a Network-Telecom technician. This first video focuses on the personal qualities that make a great network-telecom technician. The lack of any one of these qualities does not disqualify a person from pursuing the field, it just may mean that's an area the candidate needs to pay closer attention to. The Seven Personality Traits are: 1. Aptitude for Technology - do you have a "knack" for figuring-out and fixing technology gizmos. People who do well in this field are also people who happen to love computers, radios, network gear, and technology gadgets. 2. working alone - How you feel about working by yourself? Not all IT or Telecom jobs are solitary. But, field techs (and also top earners) tend to get sent out on assignments by themselves. 3. Customer service - this is a vital piece for any tech that wants to earn top dollar. It hard to find a skilled technician who is also good with people. The field has a reputation for attracting introverted personalities. However, your employer can't afford to send out a sales liaison every time you go to a customer location. So, you need to be just as much of a "people person" as you are a good technician. 4. Dealing with stress - Want to earn top dollar? Stress is just going to come with the territory. A career in Networking and telecom does not have to be non-stop stream of stressful events (if it is, find a new employer!). But, because you're being entrusted to work on components that are vital to a business function, some stress is inevitable form time to time. 5. Personal appearance - "you can't make a second first-impression". The clothes you choose, your grooming habbits, and the way you carry yourself have a big impact on your ability to garner the trust and cooperation of your customer or co-workers. Effective technicians also happen to look sharp too. 6. Willingness to learn - this is probably true for almost any profession if you want to stay competitive and relevant. Not continuing to learn is tantamount to moving backwards in your career. 7. Flexible schedule. - The nature of this business is that we are working on components so vital to business function that they often cannot be serviced during normal business hours. Moreover, when something breaks down, we need to stick with it until it is back up and running again.

How to Crimp RJ45 to Cat5e or Cat6 cable - YouTube DIY Telecom

Telecom

This shows, in great and close-up detail, how to crimp an RJ-45 (aka: 8P8C) connector on to a Catagory 5e or Catagory 6 cable. Every detail is shown close-up. The RJ-45 crimp-on end is used to create a plug-able termination point on an Ethernet cable - either Cat5e or Cat6. This is something that is frequently done by telecom field technicians when a short cable is needed. This connection is formally known as an 8P8C or 8-pin, 8 conductor. However, in the industry it is commonly called an RJ-45 (which is technically, incorrect). And, even less formally called a "network Plug" by the lay-person. Generally, Rj-45 (8P8C) crimp-on ends are not used to terminate permanent horizontal network infrastructure. The wire color pattern for the a straight-thru (normal) Ethernet cable terminated in a RJ-45 plug would be: (as seen from top with gold pins facing up and away from you) 1.White/Orange 2. Orange 3. White/Green 4. Blue 5. White Blue 6. Green 7. White Brown 8. Brown White Interested in the Crimp tool and Linemans' scissors shown in this video? Helpful tip for Cable Pulling with Reels - YouTube DIY Telecom

Telecom

This makes pulling cable from Reels so much easier and it's very simple to set up. Phone or Data Cable usually comes in either a Pull Box or a Reel (spool). I prefer reels because they have more flexibility and their form factor takes up less space on the truck. (remember that a large portion of a pull-box is empty space. My experience has also taught me that pull boxes sometime become tangled internally. And, it's my opinion that Pull-boxes over more pulling resistance than a spool. There are some added flexibility benefits to reels, but that's not the focus of this video.
