A Telephone backboard is the surface which acts as a centralized hub for all the wiring and connects related to a telecom infrastructure. Typically, this is the PBX and the wiring that extends out to the workstation areas for phone or fax. Backboards often live in small rooms called Telephone Closets. In more recent times the "Telephone Closet" has been replaced by MDF and IDF rooms. MDF and IDF stand for "Main Distribution Frame and Intermediate Distribution Frame". Things to consider when decide where and how to mount the Telecom backboard. 1. location should be protected from the elements - particularly humidity and extreme temperatures. 2. The location should make practical sense for the ability to extend wiring out to the work station locations. 3. It's helpful if the location is also in the same area where telecom circuits and phone lines enter the building. 4. The wall upon which the backboard will be mounted should be free from vibration or tramatic impacts.
