a basic, simple explanation of VoIP for a non-technical person. Voice Over IP is rapidly changing the landscape of voice telecommunications. The driving factor is how cheap it is relative to traditional phone services. Roughly half the cost or less! Plus, VoIP is so much more powerful and agile than traditional POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service). All those bells and whistles you have to pay extra for with the phone company (call waiting, Caller ID, 3-way calling, call forwarding) - those are all included in the basic VoIP service. Kick Meters (Slide or sidekick) are a tools (similar to an multi-meter) that most LEC technicans carry with them. I had a chance encounter with an AT&T Tech while we were working a trouble. He demonstrated the use of the Kick Meter in isolating trouble on the customer's inside wiring. I am not a subject expert on this tool. The tech was explaining it to me (I'm guy with the camcorder asking questions). In this video, he and I are working a customer location where the phones inside are experiencing frequent and disrupting static on calls. We checked the obvious things like oxidation at the demarc, poor slices (unfortunately, very common) and dead pairs going nowhere. I checked all the wiring inside. Sadly, it was splice after splice and a lot of those line splitters (hate those things!). I work as a freelance Network and PBX tech. Copper wiring is something I deal with often. But, troubleshooting the Telco plant is not really my forte. However, I thought this video could do everyone some good as it would at least provides some understanding of how the Bell guys go about their jobs of clearing static on the line. Plus, you might get a few ideas for your own future use. Ultimately, the problem turned out to be one of the non-ksu phones must have been damaged by lightning (very common in Florida), because when it was removed from the network, the static went away. Anyone who's worked the field for a while doing small busienss systems knows that non-ksu (multi-line phones with no PBX) phones are the most troublesome monster when it comes to noise, static, intermittent connection issues. Unfortunately, SOHO customers love these types of phones because they're inexpensive. Ironically, they save money on the front end by not buying a real PBX. But, they kind of end up spending the money later to get their phones repaired frequently.

Difference between 568a or 568b Network Wiring - YouTube DIY Telecom

shows the two different methods of wiring jacks, RJ-45, or patch panel for TIA-568a or 568b wiring. The main difference is in the positioning of the 2nd and 3rd pairs (orange and green). Most network jacks made in the past 15 years have the ability to be wired for either 568a or 568b. And, the jacks usually have a wiring color key printed on them to indicate where to put the wires for either pattern. Once the wires are laid out in the appropriate pattern in the jack grooves, the technician then "terminates" the jack with a "110 Punch Tool". (see Networkadvisor.net for list of common tools) Is one wiring method faster than the other? People will have opinions about this, but I have not seen any real evidence that one is faster. It is worth mentioning that the 568B wiring is the MOST common in the U.S. It is important to note that you need to stay consistent with one wiring pattern or the other throughout the entire network. If you are adding on to an existing network, you need to first determine if that network is wired for "A" or "B". And then, match that wiring method. There is also another wiring pattern known as USOC, this was more common back in the 70's and 80's for phone wiring. You want see it much any more. Unlike 568a/b, it fans the pairs out in a expanding concentric pattern. Blue in the center, Orange on pins 3/6, Green on pins 2/7 and Brown on pins 1/8. USOC is not used much anymore. shows how cross-connections are made from Station cabling over to the PBX. Using a one-pair 22 or 24 gauge copper jumper wire, we make "cross-connects" from the wire going out to the Telephone jack over to the ports (terminals or TN) on the PBX. Office phones are plugged in to wall jacks. Those Wall jacks have a wire that runs in the wall, through the ceiling and over to a PBX room. Inside the PBX room, those cable come together on 66-blocks. Cross-connects are used to make the electrical connection from the Station wiring over to a particular port on the PBX.

66 Block is a Telecommunications connection terminal. It acts as a hub of distribution - usually for phone service or telephone extensions. Also referred-to as a "punch-down block" because of the impact tool used to fasten the wires onto the metal pins of the block.
